Is Cancun becoming more or less popular for vacation these days?

I visited Cancun for vacation in 2009 and 2010 and I was thinking of returning for vacation in early March 2012 (right before spring break). One thing I notice big time about Cancun during these times was that it was very very dead there. Not many tourist. I went in May and June. Now, I know Mexico currently has a lot of problems with the drug cartels and I know it's 3000 miles away from the Yucantan and had the whole swine flu scare ; however you can not argue that it has impacted Cancun as far as the number of tourist who visit this paradise. My question is, with the current situation in the country has Cancun started to recover yet from the violent reputation throughout the country. I would like to go, party and meet and SEE lots of people having a great time. Trust me, I know Cancun is perfectly safe but I don't want to go it it's going to continue to be a ghost town so to speak.
