Can I carry a BB gun through the border?

I'm going to go visit Mexico next week. And i'm freaked out. I heard about the cartels, the killing, and kiddnapping. So I was wondering, will the border patrols say anything if i carry a fake BB gun? Just to scare the crap out of the drug dealers? What about a real gun? (my uncle has one)
